What are the RMT Performing Ensembles?
The Performing Ensembles are an audition-only, tuition-based program for musical theatre performers (4th-12th Grades) who rehearse and perform year-round. The Performing Ensembles consist of three groups: Headliners (8th-12th Grades), Spotlights (6th-10th Grades), and Previews (4th-7th Grades). These groups are designed to educate, train, and polish the performing arts skills of young artists through professional training and performance opportunities. The Performing Ensemble year culminates in two stellar productions: winter’s RMT Holiday Spectacular and spring’s RMT Performing Ensemble Spring Show.
All RMT Performing Ensembles are tuition-based opportunities. RMT is dedicated to furthering education for youth committed to the performing arts and offers financial assistance to those who qualify. To begin your financial aid application, click here.
The Performing Ensembles consist of three performance groups:
Headliners (8th-12th Grades)
The Headliners are a team of young artists dedicated to their rehearsals, committed to collaboration with their peers, and looking for a challenge. Their primary focus in their training is expressing the artistry of musical theatre storytelling in performance. This group offers the most advanced training in the Performing Ensembles, and as such is reserved for the most skilled and mature performers.
26-27 Season Tuition: $2150
Spotlights (6th-10th Grades)
The Spotlights are a focused and dedicated ensemble of budding young artists, learning to tell a story through musical theatre. Spotlights are committed to teamwork and bettering their skills as performers alongside an ensemble of like-minded people. During their rehearsals, they build upon basic theatre fundamentals, which results in great friendships, improved musical theatre technique, and excellent time-management skills.
26-27 Season Tuition: $1370
Previews (4th-7th Grades)
The Previews are energetic and eager young performers who love to sing, dance, and act. They are dedicated to learning the fundamentals of musical theatre performance in a team-oriented environment. They are committed to their arts education, and their growth in ability from one year to the next can be astounding.
26-27 Season Tuition: $1150
*Note: Students who participated in Performing Ensembles in the previous year and are in financially good standing will receive a 10% discount on tuition.

4th-7th GRADES

Audition Date: Saturday, June 27, 2026
Start Time: 9:00am
8th-12th GRADES
(for the 26-27 school year)
Audition Date: Sunday, June 28, 2026
Start Time: 3:00pm
Here are all the important details to know in advance:
Eligibility
In order to be eligible to audition for the Performing Ensembles, a student must have participated in any of the following Educational Programming at Red Mountain Theatre, within 1 year prior to the audition date. These programs include: one session of Youth Classes, Triple Threats, Theme Camp, Blast Camp, Musical Theatre Intensive, Teen Audition Intensive, Young Artist Production, Performing Ensembles, or Mainstage Production. If you are signed up for a Summer 2026 camp for your eligibility, the camp must take place before the auditions.
Mandatory Pre-Audition Meeting
If you have not previously participated in the Performing Ensembles, both the student and a parent/guardian must attend a mandatory pre-audition meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 5:30pm at RMT. You will need to find street parking and enter the Education Center from 2nd Ave. The meeting should last approximately 45 minutes.
How do I get cast in the Performing Ensembles?
Step 1: Register. Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements, and if this is your first time, plan to attend the pre-audition meeting. Click here to register.
Step 2: Upload your headshot and resume. Your headshot is a picture of yourself and your resume is the list of your theatre experiences (shows, classes, camp). Upload your headshot and resume in the registration form.
Step 3: Read the manual and calendar. These documents have all the details you need about the Performing Ensembles, so we encourage all families to go over them together and thoroughly. It’s a big commitment, and we want you to be prepared. Links to the 26-27 manual and calendar will be available on this page in May 2026.
Step 4: Prepare to Audition. Students should prepare 16-32 bars of an audition song to sing from memory; please bring your sheet music with you to the audition. Students should also prepare 30-60 seconds of a monologue from memory. At the audition, students will be taught an audition dance.
Step 5: Come show us who you are! Attend the audition on your scheduled date. Auditions start with a dance call that EVERYONE must attend. Then students sing and act at their registered time.
Experience
RMT is dedicated to training young artists alongside professionals, much like a teaching hospital. Our rehearsals consist of learning music and choreography for our performances, engaging in proper warm up techniques, and growing skills through focused education sessions. We spend approximately 250 hours in rehearsal and performance each year. The rigorous training and learning schedule provides the opportunity for Performing Ensemble members to flourish in an experience comparable to many collegiate and professional programs.
In addition to the RMT Holiday Spectacular and the Performing Ensemble Spring Show, members perform periodically throughout the year for businesses, civic clubs, and cultural institutions around the Birmingham area.
Ensemble members have performed in many once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They have performed alongside artists with Emmy Awards® and Tony Awards®, such as Sharif Simmons, Jason Robert Brown, Chet Walker, Norm Lewis, and many more of theatre’s finest professionals.
