JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary of Position: 

The Scenic Carpenter will assist the scene shop staff & Technical Director in the construction and installation of the scenic design to support the artistic vision of RMT productions.

Pay: $18/hour
Start Date: September 8, 2026
Benefits: Eligible

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside scene shop staff with materials acquisition, build, load-in, technical rehearsals, maintenance, and strike for all productions and events.
  • Perform scenic construction duties as assigned by the Technical Director. Construct or adapt from build plans and/or stock scenic elements for each production and ensure the safe and timely completion of all assigned projects.
  • Maintain clear communication with scene shop staff, Technical Director, and over hire staff.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, clean workplace in all production areas, including the stage
  • Attend shop and staff meetings as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by Technical Director

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Theatre or comparable professional experience with training in technical theatre production including set construction.
  • Understanding of industry standards for theatrical scenery build.  Proficient with all theatrical shop equipment and tools for set construction. Working knowledge of a variety of construction methods, materials and techniques including wood, fabric, metal and plastics.
  • MIG Welding Experience strongly recommended.
  • Comprehensive training in the safe operation of stationary and portable power tools, hand tools, stage rigging and equipment.
  • Able to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Clean driving record and valid driver’s license

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to lifting and bending, as well as climbing ladders
  • Ability to work from heights (grids, catwalks, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts)
  • Workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing
