About the show:
Cinderella receives a makeover with a clever retelling and contemporary take on the classic tale. The smart and determined Ella lives in the care of her wicked, self-absorbed stepmother Madame and Madame’s two daughters, Charlotte and Gabrielle. Ella’s only friends in the world are the animals in the woods, “crazy Marie” and the revolutionary student Jean-Michel. Meanwhile, in another part of the kingdom, Prince Topher is trying to find himself and learn his place in the kingdom. When his scheming advisor Sebastian suggests throwing a ball so the Prince could meet potential brides, Ella and Topher’s different worlds come together. The updated and bolder Cinderella paired with the timeless music of Rodgers and Hammerstein offers a production that is inspirational, empowering, hilarious, and romantic. It’s the story you love with refreshing, new twists!
Seeking actors of all ethnicities, ages, and gender identities to play the following roles:
ELLA – Female, 20’s
Though no one notices her beneath her rags and quiet demeanor, she is opinionated, charismatic, passionate and funny. Idealistic and hopeful, she courageously challenges the prince to change the policies in his kingdom and helps him discover who he truly is. Always her late father’s daughter, she is determined to see the good in everyone despite her hardships and suffering. We see her blossom into a confident woman.
Vocal range: B4 to F5, contemporary soprano
TOPHER – Male, 20-35
A misguided and lost prince who longs to do something important with his life. Though brave and heroic, he feels lonely and unfulfilled. Charming but NOT a stereotypical ladies man, he is thoughtful, appealing and innocent – with an unforced goofy streak. Moral, genuine and kindhearted, he is at a crossroads and must take control of his kingdom and his future.
Vocal range: B3 to A5, bari-tenor
MARIE – Female, all ages
A friend to Ella and the town’s resident crazy lady and beggar woman, Marie is actually a fairy godmother in disguise. Wise, warm, otherworldly and charming. Marie rewards Ella for her kindness by making her dreams a possibility.
Vocal range: A4 to A6, soprano
MADAME – Female, 45-69
Ella’s selfish stepmother. The epitome of vanity and fashion. A ravenous social climber who values wealth, status, and material possessions above all else. Unapologetically dismissive and sometimes cruel, Madame schemes her way up the social ladder.
Vocal range: C4 to D5, character mezzo
GABRIELLE – Female, 20-39
Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Encouraged by her mother and sister to value material wealth and social status, she unenthusiastically joins them in their abrasive behavior. Quietly passionate, empathetic, and witty, she is drawn to Ella and Jean-Michel. Ironically aware that she doesn’t fit in.
Vocal range: C4 to G5, soprano
CHARLOTTE – Female, 20-39
Ella’s stepsister and daughter of Madame. Brash, self-centered, materialistic, snooty, loud, sassy, and bratty. Has a ridiculously high, but unfounded opinion of herself. She never passes up an opportunity to be the center of attention.
Vocal range: C4 to F4, character belter
JEAN-MICHEL – Male, 20-39
A feisty, passionate peasant determined to make a change for the starving class. Impetuous. A firebrand, but lacks authority and isn’t taken seriously as a revolutionary. Has a crush on Gabrielle, though their courtship is forbidden because they are from different social classes.
Vocal range: C3 to G4, tenor
SEBASTIAN – Male, 40-69
The kingdom’s Lord Chancellor. Though he is Topher’s trusted advisor, he is devious and selfish. Using propaganda and dishonesty, he keeps Topher isolated and in the dark about his kingdom. Sebastian rules without regard for the lower class, or anyone other than himself – and truly believes he deserves to rule the kingdom.
Vocal range: C#3 to Eb4, character baritone
LORD PINKLETON – Male, 30-59
The Lord Chancellor’s right-hand man. Announces royal balls, banquets and even the weather to the villagers.
Vocal range: E3 to A5, tenor
Ensemble – All ages, ethnicities and gender identities. Must be strong singers and dancers. Partnering skills a plus.
