Now in our seventh year, RMT welcomes new voices, powerful works, and transformative performances to the stage.

Amid today's divisive rhetoric and Birmingham’s fractured past, RMT is working to spark world-changing conversations – one individual at a time. For through great art, we explore issues and emotions too difficult for mere words. And, this exploration opens us to consider the life of another – our fellow man.

RMT is proud to present four pieces at the Festival this year:

  • The River
  • Dissonance
  • Fountain of You
  • The Garment

Sponsored by: David & Susan Silverstein | Mary Jo Ghory

HRNWF The River

THE RIVER
Friday, September 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Music and Lyrics by Rob Cairns and Beth Thornley | Book by Jim Leonard | Based on the play Anatomy of Gray

When June's father dies, she prays for a healer to come to the small town of Gray so no one will ever suffer again; the next thing she knows, there's a tornado, and a man in a balloon blows into town claiming to be a doctor. At first, the new doctor cures anything and everything, but soon the town's preacher takes ill with a mysterious plague. And then the plague begins to spread. Set in Indiana during the late 1800s, The River explores themes of death, loss, love and healing through music and a unique coming-of-age story.

HRNWF Dissonance

Dissonance
Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m.

By Marci J. Duncan in collaboration with Kerry Sandell

On the heels of the summer of 2020, can a black woman and a white woman have an honest, civil, and candid discussion about race? Can a friendship survive the brutal honesty of differing experiences? Dissonance is a two-woman play about race, love, and friendship. Angela and Lauren have been friends for more than 20 years. They met in graduate school, became godmothers to each other’s children, and are now starting a new business. As they open their cafe in a historic black neighborhood in Pensacola, Florida, they uncover deeply-held perceptions that threaten to dismantle their friendship. Dissonance is a heart-warming play that explores the national hurt following George Floyd’s murder and how it impacts both black and white American women. Dissonance is the culmination of many messages, conversations, and Zoom meetings between Marci Duncan and Kerry Sandell about race and the reality of different experiences and perceptions. With the initial agreement to be transparent and speak truth in love, they had many tough conversations, which ultimately rendered a beautiful gift—the play. Help us share this gift across the nation.

HRNWF Fountain of You

FOUNTAIN OF YOU
Saturday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Book and Lyrics by Tasha Gordon-Solmon | Music by Faye Chiao

When a thirty-something actress is suddenly aged out of the industry, she undergoes a wildly unconventional spa procedure to get her old life back. But it sets her on a whole new path to pursue true power and equality . . . at a cost. Fountain of You is a dark comedy that takes on our preoccupation with youth and beauty, and the system underlying it all, with a pop-infused score and lots of blood.

HRNWF The Garment

THE GARMENT
Sunday, September 22 at 2 p.m.

By Audrey Cefaly

An allegorical tale for the #MeToo movement. This character-driven, all-female (3F) surrealist drama centers around the longtime partnership of renowned and controversial artist, Blue Godrey, and her seamstress and better half, Vell Mawsher. On this day in Blue's studio, last-minute preparations are underway for a big art exhibit at Tate Modern but there is disagreement over the focal piece, a large black mourning dress. Everyone is being quite civil until a woodpecker flies into the studio, sending Vell into a bottle of gin and Blue completely off the rails, pecking away at Lorraine, the new apprentice. The play examines the intersectionality of art as a sociopolitical construct and the traditionally-complicit pathways many traverse to maintain the status quo for the promise of success.
