Director of Production

Reports to: Artistic Director

Summary of Position:

The Director of Production is the primary liaison between Red Mountain Theatre and the creative design team, as well as the direct supervisor of production department heads and staff. Primary responsibilities include managing the production department budget, schedules/deadlines, theatrical equipment, and staffing. An ideal candidate communicates clearly and efficiently, manages confidential information with integrity, and can successfully lead employees to complete their tasks efficiently and safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain dialogue between RMT production staff and creative teams with the goal of delivering a high-quality product while maximizing budget and labor resources
  • Maintain the flow of information regarding design needs, changes, updates, and/or cuts
  • Organize, schedule, and facilitate Design, Production, and the scheduling of Retrospective discussions
  • Oversee creation, implementation, tracking, and expenditures of budgets for all productions
  • Negotiate and contract all guest designers and oversee contract compliance
  • Submit, track, secure, and process for payment, all rights requests
  • Track and approve production spending and/or reallocation of production funds
  • Create, communicate, and ensure implementation of production calendars and timelines for each department, ensuring seamless workflow between departments from each project’s start to finish
  • Maintain electronic calendar of all production events to include space and use needs
  • Create and distribute a Load-In and Tech schedule for all productions detailing events from Load-In to Opening night
  • Assist with facility rental site visits, scheduling, setup, and production personnel
  • Assist with RMT special events, scheduling, setup, and production personnel
  • Serve as COVID Safety Officer and liaison with Actors Equity Association as needed
  • Hire and manage production department heads to the successful meeting of deadlines, budgets, and artistic deliverables
  • Maintain job performance records and evaluate all direct reports
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5 years of Production Management experience in professional theatrical organizations
  • Experience forming and managing relationships with visiting artists, staff, and over hire
  • Strong Technical and Design experience
  • Excellent time management, organization, and administrative skills
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft products, including the Office 365 Suite
  • Ability to read and navigate technical and build drawings
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Satisfactory driving record, as determined by RMT management, and valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Production Management (or related degree field) and/or equivalent work experience
  • 10 years of Production Management experience working on large scale musicals
  • Basic knowledge of Drafting software – ACAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp
  • Proficient in AEA, USA, SDC, and IA agreements regarding standard policies and practices
  • Basic knowledge of accounting and payroll/HR procedures

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing 40+ pounds
  • Must be able to perform physical activities such as lifting, bending, and climbing ladders
  • Ability to work from heights (i.e., ladders, loading bridge, and personnel lifts)
  • Available to work nights and weekends, workdays could include long periods of time either sitting or standing
