BIRMINGHAM—For more than 30 years, Red Mountain Theatre Company has been fostering artists, inspiring youth and engaging audiences through quality theatre and education programming.
To continue its mission of enriching, educating and engaging all audiences in the Birmingham community, RMTC recently delved into a new realm of opportunity through its acquisition of The Seasoned Performers, a non-profit theatre organization comprised of senior adults.
“Senior adults want a voice, and it’s just good for seniors to see a positive image of mature performers instead of mainly 20-year-old stars,” said Martha Haarbauer, TSP founder and interim program manager. “There is so much creative energy and commitment with “seasoned” performers, and I think it’s going to be great with Red Mountain Theatre Company.”
Haarbauer founded The Seasoned Performers in 1984 with the support of Barbara Bonfield, then Executive Director of the Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services. What started as a small group of seniors evolved into a theatre company that has touched more than 145,000 people in its 32 years.
There are three branches of The Seasoned Performers, each with its own performance style. Performances are often humorous and witty as TSP produce both original and well-known material.
After decades of successful tours across the state, Martha finally decided it was time for her to retire. At that point, RMTC leadership approached TSP’s board about absorbing the organization to create The Seasoned Performers at Red Mountain Theatre Company.
The RMTC staff has already begun working with some of TSP groups, and the organization will officially be absorbed as part of Red Mountain Theatre Company Oct. 1. TSP will continue performing, touring the state and spreading a mission of enhancing senior lives through theatre.
“I think with Red Mountain Theatre Company we are going to be able to see a lot of the potential developed that has already existed with the resources RMTC has,” Martha said. “Not a year has gone by, since the beginning, that I haven’t said there’s so much more potential here.”
RMTC Executive Director Keith Cromwell expressed equal excitement over the acquisition of TSP, citing the opportunity for growth, new educational experiences and the ability to expand RMTC’s audiences.
“I consider it an honor to work with artists that were part of a thriving theatre scene before I ever came to Birmingham in 2002, particularly in respect to Ward and Martha Haarbauer as well as all those that are now or have ever been associated with The Seasoned Performers,” said RMTC Executive Director Keith Cromwell.
“I acknowledge what an important opportunity The Seasoned Performers are providing for our community and how beautiful I feel the future looks with our ability to have the experience of these tenured, mature artists interfacing with the youth at RMTC. It’s about both providing opportunity for the senior artists, but also providing the integration of seniors into our youth artist education system.”
