Red Mountain Theatre – Auditions for “The Color Purple”

This audition is for ANYONE and EVERYONE that is interested in auditioning for this wonderful production! Please be prepared to sing 16-24 bars (30 seconds-1 minute) of music that shows off your voice. An accompanist will be provided (no ipods/CD’s/etc); however, you may sing a cappella if you wish.
Please bring your 8 x 10 headshot and resume.

I have created a Dropbox folder that contains the original cast recording, just to help you become more familiar – you will not need to sing from the show at the open audition, only at callbacks. We will add the sides and cuts to this folder as well. If you have any issues with the Dropbox link, please let Carrie know and she can make other arrangements for you.
Callbacks will be on Wednesday, November 15th at 6pm.
CHARACTERS to be cast:
Celie (E3 to G5) Female, 20-37, African American
vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul, believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked; she is an observer; her eyes are very telling; eventually breaks away from a life of mistreatment and finds love and independence; needs a great belt singing voice with lots of soul.
Nettie (F3 to C5) Female, 20-39, African American
attractive, adventuresome, feisty, educated; she has a powerful bond with her older sister, Celie; forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa; needs a commanding actress with a great belt singing voice
ENSEMBLE / ADULT SINGERS: Males and females, 20s – 50s, African-American. All types and singing ranges. Need fantastic singing voices and dynamic personalities. To play various roles in the ensemble, including:
Alphonso – needs a fantastic high baritone singing voice
Celie and Nettie’s stepfather who rapes and abuses Celie and gives away her two children. Needs a commanding actor.
Church Lady 1 – (E3 to E5)
In a trio of busybody types who love to gossip about the people of their town, they comment on the action throughout the show. Understudies the role of Shug Avery.
CHURCH LADY 2 (E3 to G5)
In a trio of busybody types who love to gossip about the people of their town, they comment on the action throughout the show. Understudies the role of Celie.
CHURCH LADY 3 (E3 to C5)
In a trio of busybody types who love to gossip about the people of their town, they comment on the action throughout the show. Understudies the role of Sofia.
PREACHER (Bb2 to Ab4)
ADAM / BUSTER M
Celie’s gown-up son. Also plays Buster: appearance of a boxer, sense of comedy, small singing role.
GRADY (F#2 to B4)
Needs a great tenor singing voice. Understudies Harpo.
OLIVIA – Playing age 20-29. Celie’s daughter; grown-up. Must be a fantastic actress who sings very well.
And CHILD SINGERS (One African-American male 9 – 12 years old and three African-American females 9 – 12 years old. Need strong singing voices and dynamic personalities).
